Sport @ Shorncliffe
As well as the Health and Physical Education Curriculum, students at Shorncliffe SS have opportunities to explore pursuits in a range of extra-sporting activities. These opportunities are a valuable way for students to:
- develop a lifelong enjoyment for physical activity
- develop social skills
- build confidence and self esteem
- connect with the community
- extend skills within competitions
School Carnivals
Shorncliffe SS holds a number of different sporting carnivals throughout the year. These include Cross Country (Term 1), Junior and Senior Athletics (Term 2/3), and Swimming (Term 4). Our school carnivals do have an element of competition, with students participating as representatives of their house teams. However, above all, our school carnivals are about personal development and enjoyment.
Representative School Sport
Shorncliffe SS resides in the sporting district referred to as Bramble Bay. The district offers a range of representative trials and competitions throughout the year. These trials and competitions are for those students who are exceptionally good at their chosen sport and wish to challenge themselves in a competitive environment. These trials and competitions are the pathways to regional, state and national competitions held annually.
Interschool Sport
Students have the opportunity to participate in the Bramble Bay District School Sport interschool sporting competitions including soccer, touch football, AFL and netball. Interschool sport allows students to represent the school against other school teams from our district.
Intra-School Sport
Shorncliffe SS has developed strong relationships with many National Sporting Organisations. These organisations often help to provide opportunities for students to participate in sporting sessions run at school (intra-school sport). The purpose of these sessions is to develop foundational skills whilst instilling an enjoyment of physical activity participation. Examples of the programs that have run at Shorncliffe SS include baseball, basketball, gymnastics, badminton and orienteering.
Other Programs
Swimming Lessons
Students in Prep to Year 3 have the opportunity to participate in swimming lessons. These lessons are designed to develop water familiarity, basic stroke development and water safety skills.
Surf Lifesaving
Students in Year 4 to 6 participate in a surf lifesaving program run by Surf Lifesaving Qld. This program is a combination of school presentations on beach safety and practical based activities held at the beach. The program is designed to develop water familiarisation, aquatic skills (wading, swimming, board paddling) as well as the knowledge of beach/water safety.
Sailing
Senior students at Shorncliffe SS are given the opportunity to participate in a sailing program run by Sailing Australia at the local Qld Cruising Yacht Club facilities. This program teaches participants not only the skills of sailing but also the skills of teamwork, problem solving, independence and resilience. At the end of the program students are able to apply their skills in a sailing regatta.
Other Sporting Competitions
Throughout the year, sporting organisations run various competitive competitions for schools to enter. Depending on the timing, students at Shorncliffe SS have the opportunity to represent the school at these competitions. Past competitions include Qld Cricket T20 Schools Cup, NRL Primary School Cup, PCYC Netball Cup. These competitions are a great opportunity for students to represent their school and to develop pride in that identity.
